Resource: In Tune Monthly
In Tune Monthly is an incredible monthly online periodical that publishes interactive and streamed content eight times a year, from late September through April. Designed with middle and high school music students in mind, InTune simplifies complex music concepts for students and focuses heavily on the music and musicians that THEY listen to and enjoy. In my opinion, it is the PERFECT resource for a middle school general music class, modern band program, or any curriculum that is looking to incorporate popular music. For the past seven years, In Tune Monthly, both the Student edition and the Teacher edition, has been an included Resource in the MusicFirst Classroom.
Each edition of In Tune Monthly delivers a ton of information on a variety of music-related subjects. The content spans musical genres, instruments, music theory concepts, music creation, technology, and the music industry, as well as artist profiles. It helps explain the fundamentals of how music works in an accessible manner, while also serving as a starting point for students to dig deeper into their musical studies independently. Personally, what I love most about the content is the links to streaming music, the How To Play guides, and the fact that every page can be linked to directly from the MusicFirst Classroom or ANY online learning management system so that the students can read relevant and engaging content as a prompt for any type of assessment.
The monthly Teacher edition of the magazine includes terrific articles and lesson plans that can be used to enhance the included content from that month’s issue, as well as provide professional development. For example, in the most recent issue there is an article by my good friend and colleague Marcel Pusey on ways to incorporate creativity into any music classroom. It features his amazing software creation, OGen Plus. There are also articles on saxophone cork repair, choosing repertoire, and MIOSM (Music In Our Schools Month) resources.
In Tune Monthly is dedicated to fostering a lifelong engagement with music, encouraging students to explore roles as singers, players, listeners, creators, and industry professionals - and that is something that MusicFirst is all about too, which is why we are so proud to have partnered with them all these years, and for many years to come!
