Resource: Teaching Beatboxing with BZZKTT
The MusicFirst Classroom recently added an amazing course to their Content Library called BZZKTT. This course provides teachers and their students with the essential building blocks for learning how to beatbox - what the creator of the site calls Beatboxology. What’s beatboxing? Check out this amazing beatboxer from London named Kimmy Beatbox:
How the HECK does she do that? BZZKTT is a 6-lesson mini course that teaches you how to get started. I originally found BZZKTT, created by Gavin “Beatbox” Tyte, and was blown away by how detailed his site, lesson plans and videos were. He has broken down everything into easily digestible short close-up videos that show you exactly how to make the necessary sounds to start beatboxing. He has also created his own form of beatboxing notation, that looks like this:
Gavin goes DEEP into phonics, and explains the building blocks of what the mouth can do with certain sound and syllables. He teaches what plosives, fricatives, percussives, stops, vocals, and effectors are and how to string them altogether to create rhythmic patterns.
After using the site for a few days, I decided to get in touch with Gavin to see whether he might be interested in licensing his entire curriculum to MusicFirst. He was! We immediately began importing his amazing videos and content into the MusicFirst Content Library.
The course has lots of information, videos, and tasks for students to record themselves making their first beatbox rhythmic pattern. It breaks down each sound and has students practice their beatboxing “syllables” over and over under they can do it without thinking about it. It is a very well constructed and pedagogically engaging curriculum and is the perfect resource to teach your students how to get started beatboxing.
