Tool: Music Speed Changer

If you do anything with music on your computer, download Music Speed Changer now. This incredible FREE app and Chrome extension is a must have add-on. It allows you to change the speed and pitch of your for audio files on your device - ANY audio that it either stored locally, or in a Chrome browser tab. Music Speed Changer allows you to change the tempo of the music (in real time) without affecting the pitch, and to change the pitch of any audio without changing the speed. You can also loop any segment of audio. This app is perfect for practicing your instrument, manipulating audio for projects, slowing down that really hard lick so that you can .learn it - or even speeding up an audio or video of a lecture so that you can listen to it faster. It is one of those tools that you don’t realize just how useful it can be until you start using it.

Music Speed Changer is available in many formats: iOS app, Android app, Web app or Chrome Extension. Personally, I use the Chrome extension and web app exclusively. All you need to do is visit the Music Speed Changer website, download or install the version that best suits your workflow, and then access the audio that you are working with to use it. Installing the Chrome browser extension is extremely easy to do, and once you have, the app will always be readily available in the Extensions menu of your Chrome browser window.

So here are some of the ways I use Music Speed Changer:

Chrome Browser Extension

  • I use Music Speed Changer with YouTube videos to manipulate audio and video:

    • Great for speeding up lengthy videos - such as webinars and lectures

    • Slowing down complicated (and fast) solos to learn them

    • Transposing audio to hear it in new keys

    • Adjust the tuning of anything

  • You can use Music Speed Changer with Spotify the exact same way

  • Any website that has audio and video can be used alongside Music Speed Changer.

  • You can use the loop function to practice soloing over a given accompaniment.

  • Only negative is that you can’t download the audio using the Chrome extension. You’ll need to use the web app or mobile apps to do that.

Web App

  • If I need to import audio into a project using a DAW like Ableton Live or Soundtrap, I use the Web app because it allows me to download the manipulated audio file so that I can use it with other programs.

  • This is the easiest way to transpose, adjust tempo, or adjust the pitch of commercial audio tracks - especially karaoke tracks - so that the song sits in a better key for the singer. You can use Vocal Remover to strip out the vocals, then use Music Speed Changer to change the key or tempo.

  • Dance teachers LOVE Music Speed Changer. Adjusting tempo is a huge thing (my wife and mother are both dance teachers so this one I KNOW is important) for dance teachers - especially if they want to use a piece of music that is just a little too fast (or slow) for the choreograohy.

I cannot recommend Music Speed Changer highly enough. Once you start using it and realize just how useful of a tool it is, you’ll be using it all the time.
